How to keep my vehicle secure

Having your vehicle stolen or broken into can have an impact beyond the obvious financial hardship. The inconvenience alone is a significant burden.

Many car thefts can be avoided by following these simple steps.

When at home keep you keys concealed, don’t leave them on the kitchen bench or on your bedside table. Many car thefts can be traced back to home invasions with keys being stolen from obvious places.

If you have a pre 1996 vehicle then it may not be equipped with a transponder immobiliser. This is an easy target for a car thief. The forcing the ignition or tampering with wiring the vehicle can be started and driven away in fairly short order.

Most vehicles built since 1996 are fitted with a transponder or remote immobiliser making them much harder to steal. However with constantly evolving technologies some thieves may have access to key cloning or duplicating equipment. So even these vehicles are not entirely safe.

Where you store your vehicle has a significant bearing on its security. If you have the option of keeping your vehicle in a locked garage this will greatly reduce the chances of theft.

Keeping valuables out of sight, or not in the car at all can minimise the risk of theft. Dark tint has much the same effect.

When it comes to motorcycles there are a few options available to help reduce the chance of theft. Disk brake locks with a built in alarm have proven to be a reliable option for motorcycle security. Hand and foot break locks also reduce theft risk.
