Security Tips from A Locksmith

There are many ways to break into a lock.

You often see people in movies get into locks by picking them, but our Gold Coast locksmith experts at Terry’s Locksmiths know that there are many ways to get into a lock, and usually by less elegant methods than picking it.

Stealing Your Key

Sounds silly, but the most common way a thief will get into your lock is to steal your key.

You may have read online about people using sticks through your letterbox to unhook your keys from the wall, but even though thieves can be creative, the most common method is to walk into your house, grab the keys from the bowl beside the door, and then go unlocking and stealing your stuff.

Drilling a Lock

Have you seen those movies where they freeze a lock with liquid nitrogen and then crack it, well most thieves are not that sophisticated. However, there is nothing stopping them from taking a drill and drilling through your lock in the right place in order to open it.

We all know that people can use bolt cutters to cut open a padlock, but these days there are also hand-held metal saws that can be used.

Knocking Out Your Lock

A good way to get through a lock is to go around it altogether.

There are some internal doors where it is easier to take out the hinges than it is to take out the lock.

There are many occasions where even a seemingly strong door doesn’t hold its lock very tight to the point where you can hit the lock and knock it out of its housing.

Hidden Locks

Locks that a would-be home intruder can’t see are the best deterrent. They can’t pick something they don’t know is there.

Also, becoming increasingly more popular are electromagnetic locks – aka maglocks. When combined with a door access system, they are probably the most secure locks for your home.

A Strong Lock is Required

The best advice from our Gold Coast locksmith experts at TLS Locks is to buy strong locks, make your keys less convenient to find in your house and to buy strong locks because there are many locks that can be removed with a quick bash from a hammer.

Also, be conscious of the area around the lock, such as the strength of the door or window, or even the hinges of whatever you are trying to lock.  Contact us with your general enquiry or to request a quote.
