Should I rekey or replace my locks after a lockout?

After a lockout, many people ask whether they should rekey or replace their locks. The right answer depends on why you were locked out and whether your security has been compromised.

In many situations, rekeying your locks is all that’s needed after a lockout. In other cases, replacing the lock is the safer or more practical option. A reputable locksmith will assess the situation and explain which approach makes sense before any work is carried out.

The goal is not just to regain access, but to ensure the property remains secure afterward.

What does rekeying a lock actually mean?

Rekeying changes the internal pins of the lock so that old keys no longer work. The lock hardware stays in place, but:

  • previous keys are rendered useless
  • new keys are issued
  • security is restored immediately

Rekeying is often:

  • faster than replacing a lock
  • more cost-effective
  • sufficient when the lock itself is in good condition

This is a common solution after lost keys, tenant changes, or standard residential lockouts.

When replacing the lock is the better option

Replacing the lock may be recommended if:

  • the lock is damaged, worn, or unreliable
  • the lock is outdated or low security
  • the lock cannot be rekeyed
  • you want to upgrade security or change lock style

In these situations, replacing the lock avoids future problems and ensures the door remains secure and functional.

Does a locksmith decide this for me?

A professional locksmith will advise, not dictate.

When you contact Terry’s Locksmiths, we:

  • inspect the lock and door
  • explain whether rekeying is possible
  • outline the pros and cons of each option
  • confirm costs before proceeding

You always decide how to move forward.

Can rekeying or replacement be done on the spot?

In most cases, yes.

Once access is gained:

  • rekeying is often done immediately
  • replacement locks are installed if suitable hardware is available

This means your property can be fully secured during the same visit, without needing a follow-up appointment.

Why the cheapest option isn’t always the best option

Choosing between rekeying and replacement should be based on security and reliability, not just cost. Rekeying a worn or faulty lock may save money short-term but lead to problems later.

A good locksmith will help you balance cost, safety, and long-term peace of mind.
