The front door for many properties is one of the most vulnerable points to gain entry. Unfortunately, just having a quality lock installed may not be enough to prevent break-in.

Here are a few tips to help increase the security and reduce the likelihood of a break in through your front door:

Install a solid wooden door:

There are two main types of most people will have, either a solid wooden door or a hollow wooden door.

Hollow wooden door are the cheap alternative, in most cases they look the same as a solid wooden door but the key differences are the weight of the door… hollow wooden doors are much lighter, they are generally cheap and instead of being solid wood the whole way through, they have a backed cardboard core.

Solid wooden doors offer much greater protection than a hollow or cardboard packed wooden door. Solid wooden doors also give much better installation strength to the locks that are installed. Depending on the type of door you have and the style, sometimes it may be beneficial to have a small u-shaped wrap around piece of steel to again, give better strength to the installed locks and the door.

The door frame:

The door frame plays just as big a role in the security of your front door as the door itself. Even if you have the highest quality installed door with the best lock’s money can buy, your frame can easily give out allowing for easy access.

A common mistake people make is to strengthen the door frame with more wood. In most cases the door frame may have hairline splintering from previous damage or poor workmanship.

Steel lined wooden frames offer superior protection from frame damage and setting up your frame correct in the beginning to have multiple securing points will greatly help the overall security.

Quality Locks:

Without quality locks and multiple locking pints , having a high-quality wooden door and frame won’t offer much protection. High security commercial grade locks provide a higher class of security over residential series locks. Commercial grade locks utilise higher quality steel components and a wider range of locking types.

Peephole:

You’ll be able to do a larger scale screening of unexpected visitors with a wide-angle peephole viewer. This easy-to-install safety accessory is designed to fit any door up to 2 inches thick.
