As a locksmith on the Gold Coast, we get called out for all sorts of reasons.
One of the most distressing situations for homeowners is having to call us to change their locks and re-secure their home after coming home from a holiday to discover their house has been broken into and burgled.
Although it’s no absolute guarantee, there are ways to protect your home when you go on holidays that greatly reduce the risk of burglary and break-ins.
Courtesy of TLS Locks, here are a few home security tips to implement before going on a holiday. (They are useful for any time you are away from home).
Don’t leave the house looking unoccupied
Take measures to make it appear your house is occupied.
Don’t close the blinds or curtains. You can buy remote control units that can be programmed to do this if you wish.
Cancel any regular deliveries. Consider using a timer to switch lamps on at night.
One of the best ways to fake occupancy is to ask your neighbour’s help.
They can remove post from the doormat, put the bins out, go in and out of the house at varying times during the day and night, and even water your plants.
Be preventive in your safety by installing CCTV cameras, alarm systems, and smart locks. Using these security measures provides an extra level of awareness and safety to your home.
Put your valuables somewhere safe
Valuables should be kept out of sight and certainly not where they are visible through a window.
If you are going to conceal precious items, avoid obvious hiding places because burglars know these tricks.
If you are majorly concerned, leave your valuables with family or trusted friend.
Don’t broadcast your plans
Only tell your neighbour, friends and family that you are taking a holiday or for how long you will be away. AND, never broadcast your plans on social media.
Robust security measures
If you live in a high crime area or are more than averagely concerned, consider a burglar alarm system or a home surveillance system.
A cheaper option is to install movement-sensitive outdoor lights.
Home Insurance
It may seem an obvious point because you should have insurance to the value that covers all your possessions but the one thing to ensure is that your insurance does not expire in the time you are away.
Also, check that there is nothing in your policy that could render it void.
Relevant to our service, it is always worth checking to see if your insurance covers the cost of lock replacement.
